How To Dermaroll Safely
Benefits of dermarolling
Learning how to dermaroll safely is key to experiencing all the potential benefits of incorporating it into your skincare routine. Dermarolling is a collagen induction therapy and can improve your skin in many ways. Before we dive into safety, let’s look at all the ways dermarolling can benefit you if done properly.
Benefits of proper dermarolling
- Fine lines & wrinkles: The production of extra collagen helps plump the skin and fill in fine lines and wrinkles.
- Scaring: More collagen and elastin can reduce the intensity of stretch marks.
- Sun damage: Dermarolling promotes internal healing and helps repair sun damaged skin. It also increases product absorbency to deliver critical nutrients deeper into the skin.
- Hyper pigmentation: It helps renew pigment cells and bring them back to their normal color.
- Hair loss: Dermarolling can stimulate the scalp to promote hair growth.
From thehealthy.com medically reviewed article
“The micro-injuries you create stimulates the body’s natural wound healing processes, resulting in cell turnover and increased collagen and elastin production, therefore reversing as well as preventing signs of aging,” says Sejal Shah, MD, a dermatologist in private practice in New York City. (Microneedling works the same way lasers do, only you’re injuring the skin mechanically instead of using heat or light.)
Consequences of improper dermarolling
- Skin damage: If you dermaroll too often it can actually reverse collagen production, cause scarring, and cause your skin to become inflamed.
- Infection: Without proper sanitation measures, you can risk getting an infection.
How to dermaroll
The best time to dermaroll is at night before bed. This is how you prep your skin before dermarolling.
- Clean your face with a facial cleanser and pat dry.
- Apply numbing cream and wait 30 minutes (if desired, other wise skip and move to next step)
- Apply hylaronic acid or vitamin C serum ( you cannot use just any product before dermarolling, it cannot contain perfumes or fragrance).
- Dermaroll in all four directions shown in the photo.
- Wipe any blood away with clean wet washcloth or rinse with water. Pat dry.
- Apply post dermarolling cream ( this one is made for post procedures )
Can I wear makeup after dermarolling?
Refrain from applying makeup for at least 24 hours after dermarolling and be sure to use proper UVA/UVB protection. Do not apply retinols or glycolic acids for at least 24-48 hours post dermarolling.
What size dermaroller should I use?
If you’re mainly looking for product absorption, .25mm dermaroller is a great option. If you’re looking to target things like fine lines and irregularities, .5mm is a a better option. If you’re looking to target deep acne scarring on your cheeks you could go up to a 1.0mm, but I wouldn’t go higher than that.
Note: It is not recommended to use larger than a .5mm on your forehead.
Does dermarolling hurt?
It’s not comfortable. If you have a low pain threshold you can get a numbing cream to apply before dermarolling.
What type of dermaroller should I use?
There are a lot of dermarollers on amazon, but with having no experience it’s hard to know which one to buy. After buying a few different ones here is the type you don’t want to buy.
I would never buy this type again because the needles aren’t very sharp and they are way too close together. It came in a three pack with a .5mm, 1.0mm, and 1.5mm. The 1.0mm and 1.5mm are basically useless because they do not penetrate the skin to that degree.
This dermaroller is much more effective because the needles are much sharper and spaced out. They actually penetrate the skin and do what a dermaroller is supposed to do. It also has a larger surface area and can do more of your face at a time.
How to clean your dermaroller
If you want to have the best outcome using your dermaroller, you must sanitize it properly to minimize your risk of getting infection.
Step one
Wash your dermaroller with soap, water, and a nail scrub brush. Just cleaning it in alcohol does not break down and remove the blood.
Step two
After rinsing the soap off, get 91% rubbing alcohol and fully submerge the dermaroller for 10-20 minutes.
Step three
Rinse in water and place back in the case.
