Why non-toxic feminine care?

Having a chemical free period is more important than you think. Bleach is the last thing that sounds like a good idea to put in or near your lady bits. So much of our environment that we don’t have control over is toxic, what we do have control over we should be intentional about. The reason why toxic feminine products is such a big deal is the amount of exposure you will have in your lifetime. It’s not just a few times, its thousands of times you come in contact with these products. I think a combination of these products can be used to best fit every life situation. Moderation and balance is key.

Alternative conventional period products

There are a few alternatives to conventional period products, there is some adjusting when you head down the path of chemical free periods. You either pay a higher price for clean products or try products you aren’t used to, like a menstrual cup. So many people RAVE over menstrual cups they are worth a try! Not to mention so much better for the environment.  For every Pixi purchased they donate to a woman in need.

Here is a guid to what size you need. Getting the right size is important to ensure the best experience.

Reusable period pads

Menstrual cups not your thing? Reusable pads are a great alternative to menstrual cups. These ones from Highoh come with a waterproof bag for changing out your pad when you’re in public. Reusable pads take some time getting used to wearing. You feel them much more than regular pads. If you’re unsure about chemical free period alternatives because they feel gross and invasive, you’re not alone. It is a big step to change what you’re used to. One tip I have to cleaning your reusable pads is rinsing them out in the shower/bathtub really well before throwing them in the wash.

This is their period starter kit. Great for normal flow days.
This is their period kit for heavy flow/overnight.

Period underwear

Period underwear?! OK. Now things are getting weird. I get it! It feels weird. These can be used for lighter flow days or days you’re just lounging around the house. I think a combination of these products can be used to best fit every life situation. Moderation and balance is key.

Like the Highoh pads, they are made from bamboo viscose fiber for absorbency.

Chemical free pads and tampons

Toxin free disposable period products are a must to have on hand. There is going to be some situation where you won’t be able to store used reusable pads or just don’t love the menstrual cup ( like me ). Here are some chemical free options.

Natural period relief

Now that you’re educated on what you can use on your new chemical free period journey, it’s time to consider some natural relief options. Don’t get me wrong, some days you just need the tylenol/ibprofin, but if we can do everything in moderation and use natural alternatives when it fits, everyone will benefit from this.

Periods and essential oils

Essential oils can be really beneficial during that time of the month. They help with moodiness and can help with discomfort relief too.

Here is a list to have on hand:

  • Fennel
  • Clary Sage
  • Marjoram
  • Jasimine
  • Clove
  • Peppermint

Blending some of these oils together will give you the best power house blend for that time of the month. I like to put it on the back of my neck, directly on my abdomen, or cup my nose and inhale deeply to chill.

This blend is made specifically for that time of the month.

Heat

Sometimes I forget how much heat can help. A heat pack in combination with oils can make a great team.

I like this one specifically because you can apply it to your back or abdomen.
